Purr when you're happy, growl/hiss when you're mad
When words fail you, your feline side won't. Nothing will make that annoying human take a step back quicker than what they think is another human hissing at them.

I think I have some recordings(I have a set of headphones with a mich attatched) of me purring, yowling, and meowing and hissing. XD Me and my friend both meow over the michrophone.
She sounds like an adult cat and I sound like a kitten. XD I can't come close to a big cat, but oh well. XD I can purr.. I'm not sure if Jaguars can purr. 0x0

I'm pretty sure that jaguars can purr. I was always told a good rule of paw is if the cat can roar they don't purr and if they purr they don't roar. I think this is because they take different muscles and if you have one you don't have the other. As for hissing, I work in a restaurant and we have printers that print the tickets that the cashiers send back, well at the end of a busy day when I have heard nothing but printers going off for 3 solid hours I tend to hiss at the printers -- people look at me weird when I do this, go figure. ;D

I always figured felines in the Panthera genus couldn't purr, i'd agree with Teirga on that rule of thumb. As for purring myself i can make the noise with my tongue and tend to do so if i'm hyper (also make trill noises) but as for purring itself without using my tongue i can't. I do feel that 'buzzy' feeling on the inside so i guess i could label that as a purr, or caffiene.
My brother hisses back at me now, he'll even growl back at me since he's heard me do it to him too many times ^^;

Yes its to do with the larynx or something. As regards big cats the nearest thing is called 'chuffing'. But with me not being panther in the physical I can purr, it comes from the back of my throat and the sound is helped by my tongue I can do a brilliant throaty roar lol, though panthers can't roar as loudly as tiger and lions.

Yup it's in it's own genus Uncia, however Pathera genus cats can't purr and although Cheetah is a big cat it can purr too but it's in it's own genus of course (Acinonyx since it can't retract it's claws). Random fact time over ^^

Never get time alone? Say in the woods or something? Where you could just let it all out, whether it be in the form of running, roaring, screaming etc. As for purring so far it hasn't freaked anyone out for me. I've done it a few times in school (physics to be exact..yeah physics rocks xD ) and the response i got was "Are you Purring?..." when i admit i have i just get "Awesome" of course when someone purrs they usually take it sexually o.O like most people assume feline to be feminine/sexual. Feline is feline as far as i can see. People can be sexy though xD
(seems i'm in a rambling mood today ^^; sorry)

haha theres nothing wrong with rambling i get time alone but never in a place where i can really let it out. there are some "woods" on campus over by one quad, but people walk through there all the time so it never seems private enough. i actually had my headphones on and was singing really loudly once, and noticed some guys walk behind me on the path (i was on a swing down in a little clearing near the lake) in i was kind of like O///O and shut up after that. i dont know that it hasnt freaked anyone out, but id rather not chance it right now since i dont like to draw attention to myself in class. i also dont want people to take it the wrong way, like you said about some people interpreting it sexually. although i have sort of used it before with a boyfriend, just to show contentment or, most often, because they find it really cute how i act like a cat and it gets their attention lol

I've done it throughout my life. Unfortunately, it lead to me being extremely ostracized by kids my age and it's continued through till now by those same kids who LOVE to bring up the past. However, I'm more open about it in front of certain people. I'll purr, hiss, growl, chuff, and even let out a small sound at the end of my yawns. The best way to get me to purr is to scratch behind my phantom ears. lol.
